A dead girl, an empty British police box where one shouldn’t be and a school full of suspects with too many unusual powers.
When student, Vallon Drake discovers the dead body of a girl and a British police box standing outside the American Geological Survey Preparatory Academy, she knows someone with special power committed the murder. Heck, her school exists to teach students with the talent to rewrite the landscape as future special agents. But while Vallon wants to solve the crime, everyone else wants to cover it up. Trust Vallon to break the rules to take the investigation on—even when the cost of doing so might be her life.

Some might accuse this story of being too derivative of Harry Potter, but I enjoyed the differences. The setting is near Seattle, the feel is more modern, and the teenage angst comes through clearly. I like that it is from a girl's perspective, and the concept of the afterburn is interesting, but I could see how it could get out of hand. I also like the way the story is developed as a murder mystery.

I obtained a free copy through an Amazon promotion, so I am very happy with the story. But I could see how someone who purchases it at regular price might not be happy with it. The short story takes up 70% of the ebook, and the rest is the first part of another book about the same character.

I think it is an effective marketing tool, but I find it hard to understand the pricing when many novel-length ebooks are being sold for less.

Pretense for Murder eBook Karen L Abrahamson Reviews

very interesting no the best book but i am glad i read it. it was an easy read and not a long book
I thought this was a full length book, but it was only a short story with a Preview chapter or two of another book. There wasn't enough story for me to decided if I would really like the book.
DID NOT ORDER THIS
This short story starts with teenage Vallon Drake. She is at a high school for the gifted of power, (the AGS Prep Academy in Seattle) but even there she feels different. She knows she is more powerful than most of them and she feels their powers. Her guardian Landon just wants her to follow the rules but the itch that she gets when she doesn't use her powers gets her to disobey the rules discretely and go into the woods and use them. While coming back to sneak into the prep academy she finds a girl who looks like her dead. Vallon wants to investigate but both her guardian and the headmaster want her to stay out of the investigation but Vallon feels an obligation to investigate. She feels that they are not investigating closely because it is a crime of the gifted.
This is a very enchanting read. I truly enjoyed getting to know the character of Vallon.Avery interesting compelling read.I give this book 4 stars out of five
Strange story for me. I love mysteries but this was more for younger people however I'm not sure I'd like my own kids to read it. It is more of a short story and too fast of an ending. I like mysteries that keep you guessing and each time you think you have it figured out something happens and you have to start all over. This was not one of those books
I thoroughly enjoyed this short story. Although set in kind of a fantasy-esque situation, all was explained in a very capable manner that caught the reader up to speed quickly. The characters were interesting as was the plot.
The only part I didn't particularly enjoy was the sexual tone as the people involved were teens. I felt like the subject was handled too casually and with carelessness.

I did enjoy the excerpt from another of Ms. Abrahamson's books that deal with the title character as an adult. I would be interested in reading more from this author.
This is a prequel to a novel, but it doesn't really satisfy on its own. Vallon is a student at a magical academy -- it's like Harry Potter, except using their powers makes all the teenagers want to have sex. Apparently the teachers and administrators try to block this, but they don't do it every effectively. Anyway, there is a murder and Vallon becomes involved in the attempted cover-up.

The mystery isn't much of a mystery and Vallon isn't a very interesting or sympathetic character. She's spoiled, thoughtless, and impulsive -- not that much of a surprise for a teenage girl, but she is also boring.

Note Doctor Who features a police box, not a phone booth. This mistake would have been acceptable if the character identifying the box as a booth wasn't a Doctor Who fan, but we're told again and again how much Vallon likes Doctor Who (right down to the poster on her wall). It's disturbing to read a book and realize that you care more, as a reader, about accuracy than the author does.
